Hello there 2015!! Today I welcome you into my life not with a healthy juice, dairy free goodies or with some healthy salad. Oh no. Today I welcome you into my life with a big warm cosy hug in the form of a bitter-sweet Indonesia malty hot chocolate. It may be the season for healthy eating and setting good food goals, but it is damn cold out here!! I am happily staying in my winter vibes for now: wrapped up in jammies and a big ol’ blanket whilst grasping one of these hot chocolates in my hands.
The key to a killer hot chocolate is the two pronged chocolate attack. Cocoa powder meets deadly 100% dark chocolate: one bringing the well loved sweet chocolatey base while the other brings the hard hitting grown-up chocolate kick. On top of all this we’re going to sneak some malt into the mix to bring thickness and that cosy, sleepy feeling all good hot chocolates should have.
Ingredients – makes 5 cups of hot chocolate mix
3 cups of cocoa powder
1 cup of 100% dark chocolate, finely chopped
1 cup of malt (I used Horlicks)
1 tablespoon of golden caster sugar (if you want a sweet hot chocolate)
1 cinnamon stick
1 vanilla pod
To make – serves 1
1 1/2 cup of milk
1 1/2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix
Handful of mini-marshmallows
1. Place all the ingredients in a large air tight jar and leave to infuse with the cinnamon stick and vanilla pod for a week.
2. Heat the milk in a saucepan till warm, but not boiling. Whisk in the hot chocolate mix to remove any lumps and pour into mugs. Top with marshmallows and enjoy!
